WHAT IS MICROHEMATURIA?

Microhematuria or microscopic hematuria is a condition where there is blood in the urine which is only visible under a microscope. Usually, patients tend to find out that they have microhematuria when they undergo a medical check-up which includes a urinalysis.

SYMPTOMS OF MICROHEMATURIA

Most patients do not experience any symptoms with microhematuria. However, sometimes it can be accompanied with burning sensation during urination, strong persistent urge to urinate or strong-smelling urine

DIAGNOSING MICROHEMATURIA

Microhematuria can be diagnosed with a simple urine dipstick test or a microscopic examination of the urine.

TREATMENTS FOR MICROHEMATURIA

Microhematuria can be caused by a wide range of medical conditions such as Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), bladder or kidney stones, bladder or kidney cancers. Treatment for microhematuria depends on the cause of it. To ascertain the cause of it, doctors may perform a cystoscopy to check the inside of the bladder for abnormal growth or cancer. They may also perform some imaging tests and scans to check the kidneys. Lastly, a urine culture may be required to exclude bladder infections which may also cause microhematuria. Should the above tests prove to be normal, microhematuria is harmless and can be managed conservatively.
